In a groundbreaking collaboration, United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) has joined forces with the Monroe County School District (MCSD) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to establish the nation’s second OGS district—and the first in Florida. This partnership marks a pivotal step in advancing environmental education, coral restoration, and climate resilience across the Keys, offering students and communities unmatched opportunities to engage in hands-on, impactful learning experiences.
United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) is proud to support NOAA and local schools in their journey to become individual OGS (Ocean Guardian Schools). Through this partnership, UWCK helps schools across the Keys integrate marine science, coral restoration, and sustainability into their curricula, empowering students to become the next generation of ocean stewards. By fostering these collaborations, UWCK ensures that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on the environment.
The OGS Dive Club and Youth Ambassador programs are officially recognized NOAA initiatives that provide youth with opportunities to engage in coral restoration, marine science, and environmental leadership. While these programs are part of NOAA’s nationwide efforts, United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) is exploring ways to support them locally in the future. By working together, UWCK aims to enhance these programs and provide more opportunities for local youth to become passionate environmental advocates.
